Adventism and Homosexuality

Posted on October 11, 2010

Let me begin by making a bold statement… Spectrum Magazine should NEVER be allowed to utilize Adventist resources and events to advertize their heretical theology.  Why?  Because they have proven it once again with their article entitled “A Letter to Dwight Nelson.” This article was written by David Potter who is the coordinator for General Studies at Avondale College.  Unfortunately, Mr. Potter is allowed to preach in Adventist churches on a regular basis.

Here are some of David Potter’s thoughts on homosexuality…

1. David had this to say about his wife and her viewing of Dwight Nelson’s sermon on the Hope Channel… “She was saddened by your explanation that homosexual believers must remain celibate in order to be true to their Christian calling. She couldn’t help thinking of the hundreds of thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and intersexed (GLBTI) Adventists you would deny the joy and intimacy of a committed relationship and doom to lonely lives and the statistical likelihood of an early grave.”

2. “You must be aware that Scripture is silent on the issue of homosexual orientation.”

3. “A growing body of research suggests that sexual orientation is due to nature, not nurture or choice.”

4. “For too long GLBTI believers have been treated as pariahs, as outcasts, given no respect, driven to desperate measures. It’s time personal prejudice was set aside. The heterosexual majority in the church must learn to accept that homosexual orientation and behaviour are just as natural and normal for homosexuals as heterosexuality is for the majority. Our view of them is not gracious and our narrow understanding of Scripture is not necessary.”

5. “The gay people I know are just as incurably gay as I am incurably heterosexual.”

All I can say is… “WOW!”  I might believe the above statements are acceptable if they were worked into an April’s Fool article.

As Seventh-day Adventist Christians, we believe…

Fundamental Belief #23 – Marriage and the Family:
“Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the Christian a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith. Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence of the relationship between Christ and His church….” (Gen. 2:18-25; Matt. 19:3-9; John 2:1-11; 2 Cor. 6:14; Eph. 5:21-33; Matt. 5:31, 32; Mark 10:11, 12; Luke 16:18; 1 Cor. 7:10, 11; Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:1-4; Deut. 6:5-9; Prov. 22:6; Mal. 4:5, 6.)

Seventh-day Adventist Position Statement on Homosexuality:

“Seventh-day Adventists believe that sexual intimacy belongs only within the marital relationship of a man and a woman. This was the design established by God at creation. The Scriptures declare: “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24, NIV). Throughout Scripture this heterosexual pattern is affirmed. The Bible makes no accommodation for homosexual activity or relationships. Sexual acts outside the circle of a heterosexual marriage are forbidden (Lev. 20:7-21; Rom. 1:24-27; 1 Cor. 6:9-11). Jesus Christ reaffirmed the divine creation intent: “‘Haven’t you read,’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator “made them male and female,” and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?” So they are no longer two, but one'” (Matt. 19:4-6, NIV). For these reasons Adventists are opposed to homosexual practices and relationships.” (This statement was voted during the Annual Council of the General Conference Executive Committee on Sunday, October 3, 1999 in Silver Spring, Maryland.)

[Adventist Statement on Homosexuality]

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure our theological (Biblical) understanding on this subject is VERY clear.  Plan and simple… Homosexuality is a sin against God (just like alcoholism, drug addiction, addiction to pornography, food addiction, etc.).  Does this mean there is no hope for those currently involved in this type of lifestyle?  No way!  When it comes to Jesus, there is always hope for victory and freedom from sin.  God wants His created beings to experience the abundant life here and now.

“For this cause, God gave them up to dishonorable affections.  For even their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature.  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust toward one another; males with males working out shamefulness, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was fitting for their error.”  Romans 1:26, 27

If you are struggling with this type of sin, ask God for freedom and victory today.

As for the Church, we need to make sure every local church is a safe place for active homosexuals to worship and grow in Christ.  If you hear people in church talking about homosexuality in a negative way, just ask them to be careful… they don’t know if they are offending a homosexual in attendance or someone who may have a relative who is a homosexual.  Let’s work on the beams in our own eyes before we go looking for beams and specks in the eyes of others.

Enough said!

Have a GREAT day!
