Protect Our Children From Sexual Predators

As most of you know, the Catholic Church has a bad reputation for employing priests who molest innocent children.  This type of “sinful” behavior is not isolated to the Catholic Church only.  Every once in a while, one of our Adventist ministers or other church leaders will intentionally abuse one or more of our precious children.  These actions damage the victims for life and can never be erased from the mind (not until Jesus returns).

The Henry Daily Herald out of the state of Georgia, USA reports that, “A pastor at a Jonesboro (Adventist) church was arrested this week on child sex charges, and is being held without bond in the Clayton County Jail.” [READ MORE]

I do not have all the details to the above story, but I do know we need to make sure our children are protected from sexual predators.  Just because a person is the Pathfinder, Sabbath School, church school, or youth leader, does not mean he or she is free of sin.  We need to make sure our church leaders and ministries have accountability policies in place to protect our children.  Background checks need to be made on all people who work with our young people.

Policies are not enough… TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN!  Before your child goes on a campout or to Pathfinders, warn them about bad people who like to do bad things.  Teach them about what is “good touch” vs “bad touch” and how to respond when someone tries to violate their personal space.  If you have a good and open relationship with your child, he or she will hopefully be comfortable talking to you about anything that makes him or her feel uncomfortable.

Last but not least… Never tolerate harmful behavior on the part of church leaders, especially the pastor.  If a church leader is acting in a strange or questionable way, say something to that person or another leader.  We MUST protect our young people and NEVER come between them and God.

“Jesus called a little child to Him and set him in their midst, and said, Truly I say to you, Unless you are converted and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore whoever shall humble himself like this little child, this one is the greater in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever shall receive one such little child in My name receives Me.  But whoever shall offend one of these little ones who believes in Me, it would be better for him that an ass’s millstone were hung around his neck, and he be sunk in the depth of the sea.” (Matthew 18:2-6)
