Jesus is the Reason for the Season

Posted on December 17, 2011

I love the Christmas season… Christmas trees and decorations… family reunions… home cooked food and cookies… listening to Christmas music and watching old fashioned Christmas movies. Most of all, I love the fact that millions of people around the world focus on the wonderful gift God gave us through His Son Jesus. Many people get caught up in the materialistic approach to the holiday, but this should not cause us to lose sight of the reason for the season.

As Christians, we do not know the day Jesus was born, but should take advantage of the yearly opportunity to connect with others in looking to the birth of our Savior. If people are looking for a good quality Christmas program to attend during the holiday season, we should provide one. If people are willing to gather together for food and fellowship, we should throw a Christmas party… making sure Jesus is the reason. If people are willing to receive a gift, we should be purchasing good message books and Bibles… wrapping them up in festive paper and distributing them to our family, friends, and neighbors.

I get tired of Adventist Scrooges who go around saying, “Humbug! Christmas is for pagans.” I know all the anti-Christmas arguments about why we should not celebrate the holiday, but this does not kill the Christmas joy. I keep my eyes locked on Jesus and enjoy the season with my family and friends, knowing that He is the reason for the season.

If you respect the prophetic work of Ellen G White… please know that she supported the celebration of Christmas and encouraged us to put up Christmas trees in our churches to be used to collect offerings for the poor. She also taught that Christmas is a good time to give religious books to others as gifts.

I do not know about you, but I have some good Adventist sharing books I want to share with my neighbors this year. I will get my family together and we will have fun wrapping the books, praying that God will shine through us as we share His good news. I want to encourage you to be a Christian full of light this holiday season. Please do not allow the devil to work through you… causing you to be negative and bitter during one of the most joyous times of the year.

May the good Lord bless you and your family with joy, love, and a desire to be like Jesus this holiday season.
